Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest extended

Myanmar’s military junta has extended the house arrest of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi by another six months. The 62-year-old has been under house arrest or in prison for more than 12 of the last 18 years.

The move is likely to dismay Western donar nations which have pledged millions of euros in conditional aid since Cyclone Nargis hit on May the 2nd. Myanmar´s military, criticised for its response to the disaster which left 134,000 dead or missing, has slowly opened its doors to foreign aid workers.

However, the generals grip on the isolated country remains as tight as ever. Earlier the Junta arrested 20 members of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy as they marched to the home of their leader.

At the same time army-controlled media praised the UN for its help following the disaster. Nearly a month after Nargis hit the UN says fewer than one in three in the most need have yet to receive any aid.

Witnesses say many villages remain littered with animal carcasses and corpses with the dreadful drone of flies everywhere.
