Turkey lifts ban on Islamic headscarves

world news

| |

Turkish MPs have approved two constitutional ammendments on lifting the ban on Islamic headscarves in universities.

The government says the ban means many girls who want to wear the headscarf are denied further education.

But many in Turkey, including the army, see it as giving Islam a greater role in secular life.

The opposition has vowed to appeal to the Constitutional Court, saying the changes are a challenge to democracy.
