Protests greet Turkish headscarf changes

The wearing of the headscarf is deeply divisive in Turkey, where the state has been strictly secular.

Thousands rallied in Ankara to protest the plans, saying the government is introducing Islam by the backdoor.

However, the Islamist-based AK government has a safe majority in parliament, and insists the proposed changes mean only loose-fitting scarves will be permitted, not the all-enveloping burka or chador.
