Romania welcomes Nokia’s mobile move

Cluj in Romania is the focus of much German anger because it is where Nokia is building a factory to take over production of mobile phones after it closes down its plant at Bochum in western Germany where 2,300 people will be laid off.

Wages in Romania are a fraction of those in Germany and one local welcomed the factory saying: “Up till now all the young people have left this village to seek work in Germany and Italy, we hope this factory will keep them here.”

There has been much sturm and drang from German politicians with the Economics Ministry saying it has arranged a meeting “soon” in Berlin with Nokia senior management to discuss the closure but Nokia said it will not enter into any talks about keeping the Bochum plant open.
