Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa has outlined the priorities of the European Union for the next six months as his country takes over the EU’s rotating presidency. Slovenia’s most pressing concern is co-ordinating the EU’s position on Kosovo. The breakaway Serb province is expected to defy Belgarde and Serb ally Russia by declaring independence in late March or early April.

Jansa understands the importance of finding a just solution for this unique problem.

He said: “It appears an agreement will not be possible within the United Nations in the forseeable future. On the other hand, we all know delaying a solution could drastically destabilise the wider Balkan region. The current situation cannot go on and Kosovo represents a special case and cannot be compared to any other situation in the world.”

Serbia goes to the polls on Sunday with the EU looking to delay a plan to launch a police and justice mission in Kosovo until mid-February, so as not to influence the outcome of the Serb elections.
