France looks set to ban the growing of the only genetically modified crop in the country.
Last month, under pressure from consumers, the government suspended the commercial use of Mon 810, a maize developed by US biotech company Monsanto.
A government led group of scientists and farmers decided to look into the environmental and health implications of its use, paving the way for an extension of the ban. Meanwhile the EU faces World Trade Organisation sanctions if it refuses to end the ban on genetically modified imports. The US government will decide over the weekend whether to push for further sanctions at the WTO on Monday.
