Orthodox Christians have been celebrating their Christmas.

In Serbia, Russia and other Eastern Orthodox churches, Christmas is rung in according to the Julian Calendar.

While Serbian president Boris Tadic and other senior politicians joined the faithful in Belgrade cathedral, national radio and television carried a message from the religous authorities.

It spoke of shared sadness and worry over Kosovo — “our sacred land, heart and soul of the Serbian people.”

In Montenegro, the traditions include blessings round open log fires.

Patriarch Alexy II, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, presided at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow.
