Naples garbage mountain continues to grow

world news

| |

The Naples rubbish crisis just won’t go away. Local residents have refused to allow the reopening of an old landfill site leaving authorities with nowhere to put the 100,000 tons of refuse now festering on the streets. Now residents say they won’t send their children to school after the Christmas break.

Rubbish started to accumulate on the streets 2 weeks ago when collections stopped. Residents are refusing to allow old landfill sites to be reopened because they say they’re dangerous.

Problems with refuse disposal in Italy’s southern region of Campania have been around for years. In spite of efforts by local authorities and the appointment of a succession of Garbage Czars, the mountain of rubbish just keeps growing.
