The tens of thousands who have been forced to flee their homes are seeking refuge where they can. Those refugees who have reached safety face shortages of food and water. The biggest displacement appears to have taken place in the west of the country where simmering inter-tribal tensions have erupted into blood-letting: “I am here because my house has been burnt, nowhere I can stay. And I cannot even go to search for food because they have covered the area,” said one refugee.

Western Kenya has not witnessed such violence since 1997 when hundreds of mainly Kikuyus were killed and thousands more displaced.
