A celebration of the works of the composer Olivier Messiaen has just drawn to a close at La Cité de la Musique in Paris. The Olivier Messiaen competition for contemporary piano brings together young musicians from across the world. They are judged on their interpretation of his serial rhythms and musical expression that broke with traditions in the middle of last century, but which is not always easy on the ear.
