A Spanish policeman has been killed and another seriously wounded in a shooting in France. It is reported the Guardia Civil officers were shot during a surveillance operation against the armed Basque separatist group ETA. If confirmed, this would be the first killing by ETA since it called off a 15-month-old ceasefire in June. At a Socialist party conference in Madrid today, there was a minute silence for the victims.

ETA has killed more than 800 people in four decades of armed struggle for independence for the Basque regions in northern Spain and southern France.
