Turkey rages at US hindrance over PKK

world news

| |

The United States has come under fire in Turkey, for its perceived lack of action over the Kurdish PKK rebels in northern Iraq. Anti-American protestors at a demonstration in Istanbul blamed Washington for blocking Turkish plans to send troops across the border to attack the rebels.

The US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is due in Turkey tomorrow, for a meeting of Iraq’s neighbours and the major powers. Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will raise the Kurdish rebels’ situation with his Iraqi counterpart, Nuri al-Maliki. Washington and Baghdad fear Turkish raids into northern Iraq will destabilise the region, and put more strain on the fragile political equilibrium in Iraq.
