More than a million people are reported to have been evacuated from the southeast Chinese coast with the arrival of a strong storm. Typhoon Krosa has made landfall near the Zhejiang and Fujian provinces. The typhoon has already hit Taiwan and Vietnam, with winds of up to 130 kilometres an hour.

At least five people are reported to have been killed in Taiwan. The rescue of the 27-member crew of a cargo ship is also underway. Dozens of people have been injured in the storms, with widespread flooding reported in many regions.

There is some relief on the way though. Forecasters have downgraded the typhoon from category four to one, saying it should weaken to a common storm as it heads north and then back out to sea.
