Three Germans travelling in a diplomatic convoy were killed, and a fourth person wounded in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan. Witnesses at the scene said a white four-wheel-drive vehicle was totally destroyed in the blast.

The device went off as the convoy passed by outside the capital Kabul. German media sources said the victims were from Berlin’s embassy in Kabul, working with Germany’s criminal investigation agency, perhaps involved in negotiations to free a German hostage held in Afghanistan.

A spokesman for the Taliban claimed to have carried out the attack, by remote-control.
