Some hope in Spanish forest fires

world news

The fires that have ravaged the Spanish Canary island of Gran Canaria have reportedly been stabilized. But the forest blazes on the neighboring island Tenerife continue to cause devastation. Some 14,000 hectares of trees have been razed by the flames since Monday. Authorities on the two islands say 9,000 people have been evacuated because of the inferno. They say an expected change in weather conditions, especially the wind in the area, should help reduce the intensity of the blaze. An estimated 900 people are being deployed in fighting the vast fire. They are assisted by five water-carrying helicopters and two fire-fighting aircraft.
