Australia has dropped charges against an Indian doctor arrested in connection with a failed car bomb plot in Britain last month.
Mohamed Haneef was arrested at Brisbane Airport earlier this month and charged with recklessly supporting terrorism by providing a relative in Britain with his mobile phone card. But Australia’s chief prosecutor Damian Bugg has decided to drop the charges after weeks of damaging media leaks and growing public criticism about the lack of strong evidence against the doctor. The Australian government said it would seek further legal advice on whether Haneef should now be deported. But it released him from jail while his immigration status was being clarified. “On my view of this matter, a mistake has been made,” Bugg told reporters in Canberra. Three people have been charged over the failed car bombs in Britain, including a relative of Haneef, accused of failing to disclose information that could have prevented an attack. Another second cousin of his remains in hospital with severe burns after a jeep was driven into a terminal at Glasgow Airport and blew up in flames.
