Commissioner concludes China trip

The European Union’s Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva has wound up her five-day trip to China calling for better quality control for Chinese exports destined for Europe. On the last day she toured a toy factory. The Chinese toy association says exports last year topped 15 billion euros. However the EU says that toys for the first time outstripped electrical goods in RAPEX alerts for dangerous products.

“Unfortunately, according to the statistics to our system for dangerous goods, we detected quite a high figure of dangerous toys on the European markets and I would like this message to be conveyed not only at very high official levels, which I did at the beginning, but also at local levels and to the producers as well,” says Kuneva.

She warned that about half of all unsafe products originated in China, and that it would hit China’s international reputation and might damage growth if unchecked. Last month one and a half million train sets had to be pulled from the US market because they were covered in lead paint.
