African Union meets to discuss closer ties

world news

| |

The 53 members of the African Union are ín the Ghanaian capital, Accra, for a three-day summit to discuss the formation of a United States of Africa. Most AU leaders appear in favour of a gradual, step-by-step coming together. Declaring himself a “soldier for Africa”, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi who has long campaigned for African unity spoke on the eve of the meeting. “My mission is to encourage my brothers to wake up African people to unify our continent.” he said.

Africa watchers have criticised the meeting’s single-issue agenda while ignoring pressing problems like violence in Sudan’s Dafur region and repression and economic meltdown in Zimbabwe.
