Mahmoud Abbas has accused what he calls “foreign elements” of fomenting the Palestinian crisis which ended in Hamas taking control of Gaza.

The Palestinian president was speaking from the West Bank city of Ramallah where his new Palestinian government has its base.

He also said there would be no dialogue with “terrorists, killers and coup plotters” – referring to Hamas – saying his government would act in a democratic way.

Abbas, who dissolved the Hamas-led government last Friday after the Islamist group took control of the Gaza Strip, has said he will call for a new election as soon as the situation on the ground allows it.

The president, who enjoys international backing, said foreign countries would place their confidence in the emergency government.
