Two generals face war crimes charges in Zagreb

In Croatia, two generals charged with war crimes against Serbs have gone on trial in Zagreb.

The case against the two men was transferred from the war crimes tribunal in the Hague. It is being described as a test case for Croatia’s judiciary, ahead of talks on possible EU membership.

Mirko Norac and Rahim Ademi have pleaded not guilty to half a dozen charges, including failure to prevent killings, torture and destruction of property.

The two are accused of being in charge of soldiers who killed some 30 Serb civilians and prisoners of war in southern Croatia in 1993.

The case was first investigated by posecutors in the Hague, who then forwarded the information to Croatian prosecutors.
