Israeli police say two Katyusha rockets have exploded in the northern town of Kiryat Shmona, close to the border with Lebanon. There are no reports of casualties but the blasts did cause some damage. Last summer the region came under sustained rocked attack by Hizbollah during Israel’s war with the Shi’ite militant group.

It was the first apparent cross-border attack since the conflict. It is not clear who was behind the strike.

But a security source in Lebanon was quoted as saying suspicion was falling on Palestinian fighters, rather than Hizbollah.

Memories of last summer’s conflict are still fresh for Israelis in the area and residents were ordered into air raid shelters after the explosions.

A UN force is now deployed on the Lebanese side of the border. Its presence is meant to prevent rocket attacks on Israel.
