Decisive vote in French parliamentary elections

French voters are going to the polls today for the decisive second round of parliamentary elections. The conservative UMP party of newly-elected president Nicolas Sarkozy is widely tipped to win a large majority. The president needs control of parliament to push through deep economic reforms he has promised.
Out of the 567 seats up for grabs, polls indicate the UMP and its allies could take as many as 420 seats.

Only one of 110 deputies elected outright in the first round of the elections a week ago was an opposition Socialist.

The Socialist party, in a phase of soul-searching after its defeat in the recent presidential race, has been warning voters about what it describes as the danger of Sarkozy having too big a majority.
