Israeli political veteran Shimon Peres has formally announced he is running for president, at the age of 83. Currently number two in Israel’s Cabinet, he has already received the backing of the ruling Kadima Party. Having failed in his previous presidential bid in 2000, Peres will try again on June 13. Last time around he was beaten by Moshe Katsav whose presidency is drawing to a close amid scandal. Denying accusations of rape and sexual harassment, Katsav could face up to 16 years in jail.
