Morocco is trying to get to grips with its illiteracy problem. According to UN figures, only 50 percent of the Moroccan population can read or write, compared to the worldwide average of 80 percent. The problem is most marked in rural areas. It’s a major obstacle not just for those concerned but for the development of the country as a whole. And it’s an issue that needs attention in most Mediterranean countries.
