Hardline Serbian parliament speaker quits

world news

| |

Serbia’s hardline nationalist parliament speaker Tomislav Nikolic has resigned from the position. He called parliament to session, telling the assembled members: “I am ashamed that I was a speaker to some of you.”
A new speaker will now be elected, after Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and President Boris Tadic formed a coalition agreement on Friday.

Following the passionate speech, Nikolic announced: “I resign the position of Serbian parliament speaker.”

The European Union is now urging Serbia to press ahead to allow closer links between the two, with accession talks likely to be on the agenda.
