Diplomatic build-up to Iran-US talks

world news

| |

Iran has not had diplomatic ties with the US since 1980. Ahead of a planned meeting to discuss security in Iraq, both sides are seeking to shore up relationships in the region. US Vice President Dick Cheney arrived in Cairo on the final leg of a Middle East tour, holding talks with Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was visiting the United Arab Emirates. There, he called for an end to the presence of US troops in the Gulf, according to an Iranian news agency. Washington has accused Tehran of backing Shi’ite militia in Iraq and seeking an atomic bomb. Iran denies both charges.
