Confusion over US deaths at Afghan meeting

world news

| |

Two US soldiers are reported to have been killed during a peace-making meeting in the tribal Kurram region of southern Afghanistan. Present at the meeting were Afghan and Pakistani troops, who are both accusing each other of shooting the American soldiers, according to the Reuters news agency.

The meeting was called after the worst clashes in years between Afghan and Pakistani forces which came to a head at the weekend. US soldiers were hoping to mediate a peaceful end to the dispute. The Afghan Defence Ministry says a Pakistani officer opened fire on the US soldiers, killing two and wounding two others. Pakistani officials say the shots were fired by the Afghan troops.
