Storms and tornadoes hit American east coast

world news

| |

Violent storms are continuing to batter the north-east of the United States. Flood warnings have been issued as a result of heavy freezing rain and strong winds. Up to eleven centimetres of rain has already fallen. Hundreds of flights out of New York’s three airports have been cancelled.

But it isn’t only the north-east which is experiencing the unseasonal weather. A cold front further south has provoked tornadoes in Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas. Damage has been extensive, but it’s feared worse is yet to come. Winds could increase to hurricane force. Emergency shelters have been set up to help those most affected.

There have even been snowfalls in upstate New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Up to 30 centimetres has fallen in some areas.
