Up to 700 points on British railway tracks are being checked by experts after the crash of a highspeed train in northern England. An elderly woman was killed and several other passengers were seriously injured in the accident on Friday.

Investigators say they are focusing on a set of points located close to where the London to Glasgow train derailed. Points allow trains to change direction and move from one track to another. Routine maintenance work had been carried out on the line in the week before the crash.

Since 2000 there have been two other derailments in Britain, killing 11 people. The Rail, Maritime and Transport Union claims the latest derailment shows that not enough has been done to upgrade Britain’s tracks.
