Cyclone Favio devastates Mozambique town

world news

Mozambicans are counting the cost of Cyclone Favio after high winds cut a swathe of destruction through the country on Friday. Reports say four people were killed and at least 70 injured. Thousands have been forced from their homes. Humanitarian agencies are battling to keep those displaced supplied with food and water.

One man said he lost his suitcase and clothes after he fled the cyclone. “I have no food – I expect to go hungry all day,” he said. The deaths and injuries took place in the resort town of Vilanculos. The cyclone damaged the court house, prison and destroyed the town’s hospital with winds up to 270 kilometers an hour. Favio, which has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, is currently headed towards Zimbabwe.
