Second suspected bird flu case in Hungary

Thousands of goslings have been culled at a farm in Hungary close to where the EU’s first outbreak of the deadly form of bird flu since the summer was confirmed last week. Tests are now being carried out to see if there has been a second case. A Hungarian chief veterinary officer said the four-week-old birds showed symptoms of the disease and that he has little doubt it is the H5N1 strain.

The latest discovery was made in the southeast of the country, in the same region where more than 3,000 geese were slaughtered last week. Several countries have since imposed import bans on Hungarian poultry. The EU says that Hungary has taken all the necessary protection measures.
