Austria’s new leader, Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer, has made his inaugural speech to parliament, becoming the 10th. chancellor in the history of the second Austrian republic, and the fifth from the Social Democratic left. In his speech he presented the main programme of his grand left-right coalition: “What do Austrians expect from their politicians? Austrians have real ideas about politics, and they want the chance to live and grow according to their ideas”, he said.

The speech was welcomed with applause, a far cry from last week’s taking the oath of office, when Gusenbauer was booed by some who feel he has sold out in the interests of forging a coalition. The government had a difficult birth, needing two months of talks to stitch together.
