Authorities in Norway are carrying out a major clean-up operation after a cargo ship ran aground and broke up off the country’s south-west coast. The vessel, called “The Server” was carrying no cargo, but officials fear environmental damage from a possible spill of half of its 650 tonnes of fuel.

Some of volunteers helping to contain the spill say this has been an accident waiting to happen.

The Server was en-route to Murmansk in Russia when it ran aground on Friday night after hitting rocks near the Hellesoy lighthouse on the island of Fedje, northwest of Bergen.

It is not clear what caused it to hit rocks.

Authorities say conditions on the coast were rough with seven metre seas, but not unusually harsh for this time of year.
