Sibiu, in Romania, has launched its programme as one of the EU’s two capitals of culture for 2007. The other is Luxembourg. Special activities throughout the year will include theatre, concerts, exhibitions, debates, dance and film festivities. Called “Hermannstadt” by its German founders in the twelfth century, Sibiu lies in the heart of Transylvania. It had the good fortune not to be destroyed in the World Wars. Renovations in the run-up to the opening celebration set out to present its architectural diversity in the best light. It is especially known for its medieval fortifications. Last year more than 400,000 tourists visited Sibiu. This year the city looks forward to welcoming more than twice as many.
