The winter holiday season has got off to a good start in France despite a severe lack of snow according to the tourism industry. A large number of ski lifts remain shut and resorts have had to think up alternative activities to keep holiday-makers busy. Many resorts are relying heavily on artificial snow.

Many people have opted for more exotic destinations. Tour-operators have noted a surge in bookings for far-away places like the Maldives or the Carribean – although it’s not necessary to go that far for a bit of sunshine, with unseasonally clement temperatures blessing the Cote d’Azur. “It’s remarquable for December,” said one man on the beach. “Coming from Paris, it’s like landing on another planet.” Many beach restaurants are serving their customers outdoors and have dusted off the chaise longue for to the delight of their winter customers.
