Iran’s parliament has passed a bill directing the government to revise cooperation with the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Speaker said the bill authorised President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to take political action to resolve the stand-off over Tehran’s nuclear program. This might include placing conditions on UN inspections of atomic facilities. But the bill stops short of approving some MP’s calls to end the inspections.

The bill comes in the wake of a UN Security Council vote imposing sanctions on Iran, for not suspending its nuclear programme. The bill directs the government to speed up nuclear activities, in defiance of the UN. The Speaker said the political response it authorises, could also include pulling out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
