The outgoing UN Secretary General has said he sees the failure to prevent the Iraq war as the worst episode of his 10 years in charge. At a farewell press conference, Kofi Annan criticised the US government’s failure to get UN approval before invading: “When next time, one is dealing with a broader threat to the international community, one will wait and seek the approval of the Security Council. When it’s an issue of a broader threat to the international community, only the Security Council has that legitimacy.”

Speaking less than two weeks before he steps down on December the 31st, Annan was asked what lessons can be learned from Iraq. He voiced concern over Iran and its nuclear programme, and warned the government of Sudan that the international community will hold it responsible for events in the troubled region of Darfur, dubbed the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
