Israeli cabinet refuses West Bank ceasefire

world news

| |

The Israeli-Palestinian ceasefire in Gaza will not yet be extended to the West Bank. After a cabinet security meeting, Israel’s Defence Minister Amir Peretz said military operations will continue there to stop attacks on Israeli soil.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place in Gaza for a week. Peretz warned Palestinian militants that Israeli patience is wearing thin. Isolated rocket strikes launched from Gaza have continued without causing any casualties. One armed Palestinian group has said Israel has two weeks to stop military action in the West Bank or face more attacks.

Several diplomats are using the truce as a basis for talks in the Middle East. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met Austrian counterpart Ursula Plassnik. On Saturday, Plassnik was received by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
