A voluntary code of conduct on marketing violent video games is being urged on European governments and industry by Brussels. The idea behind it is to protect children. The EU’s justice commissioner has also suggested common rules on labelling.
A spokesman said the industry would be encouraged to exercise self-restraint. He said games which feature obscene cruelty and brutality risk provoking copy-cat behaviour or lead the undiscerning to consider the action as normal.
The Commission wants the EU interior and justice ministers to take up the question when they meet early in December, and then hold a conference with the industry early next year.
