A large consignment of nuclear waste is on the last leg of its four-day journey from France to northern Germany. There has been serious disruption along the route from hundreds of anti- nuclear protestors. A huge police operation was mounted to safeguard the train, carrying 175 tonnes of material, which was generated in Germany but processed in north western France. Some 16 000 officers were mobilised.

The disruption was most severe during the last 50 kilometres of the journey, particularly when campaigners suspended themselves from a cable hung across the tracks. 200 people had to be removed from the lines at Dannenberg, near the final destination of Gorleben. However, no serious incidents have been reported.

The protestors are calling for an end to such convoys and for the storage site itself to be closed down.
