Cargo of French nuclear waste diverted by protests

Anti-nuclear protesters in northern Germany have staged demonstrations against a consignment of nuclear waste due to arrive there from France. Yesterday police broke up a blockade by activists and farmers with tractors near the town of Gorleben where the material is due to be stored.

Protest organisers are hoping local officials will change their mind about the cargo, which is expected to arrive on Monday morning. 175 tonnes of waste described as highly radioactive is being transported by train. Authorities say it has had to be diverted because of protests, but is on schedule to arrive on time. Thousands of police will be on duty for the arrival of the nuclear waste in Gorleben.
