Anna Politkovskaya may have been laid to rest, but the political fallout surrounding the reporter’s murder shows no sign of diminishing. Hundreds gathered at a Moscow cemetery to pay their final respects to the journalist who openly criticised President Vladimir Putin, particularly with regards to Chechnya. Politkovskaya received many death threats over the years and last Saturday those threats became reality when she was gunned down in her Moscow apartment block.

Many lay the blame for her killing firmly at the feet of the authorities. In Germany for a state visit, President Vladimir Putin made his first comments about the case. While describing the murder as “a disgusting attack” he questioned the influence of Politkovskaya’s work in Russia, claiming it was minor. A full investigation has been promised but some have expressed doubts that the case will ever be solved.
