Tents have sprouted on the parliament lawns in Budapest as anti-government protestors continue to campaign against a government they claim is illegitimate. Here protest is peaceful, but the capital endured another night of violence on Tuesday, and another is feared tonight. The police claim a hardcore group, with many known football hooligans, split from a 10 000 strong peaceful march last night to surround the headquarters of the Socialist party, throwing cobblestones, vandalising shops and cars, and attempting to set up barricades.

The Prime Minister and his government allies remain firm, however, and Ferenc Gyurcsany said he would have “zero tolerance” for those using violence. He also said he regretted the mainstream rightwing parties failure to intervene and appeal for calm.

It appears many extreme rightwingers may be behind the scenes like those of Monday and Tuesday nights. 1000 police had their hands full last night, and another 57 people were hurt in clashes, including one policeman described as seriously injured. Over 100 arrests were made.
