Despite the turbulent political events in Thailand, calm reigns on the streets of Bangkok. As news of the military coup filtered out, the majority of bars, restaurants and businesses in the city centre chose to close early. However, no curfew has been imposed. Bangkok Airport, a major international hub, remains open to air traffic. Some have already decided to leave the country. “I was worried when I saw the news on TV and there was supposed to be also a curfew,” said one visitor.

“So I thought it was best as a tourist to get as soon as possible to the airport, so I came here early.” The British Foreign Affairs Ministry says it is monitoring the situation closely. Officials are urging nationals in Bangkok to avoid moving around the city and to keep away from any large crowds or demonstrations.
