International donors at a conference in Stockholm have pledged more than 700 million euros to rebuild Lebanon. The sum is almost double the target amount. Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora promised transparency in the distribution of funds.

“We want to use all the mechanisms that would comfort the donors and would assure the Lebanese and the world community that this money is going to receive the ultimate use for the needy people of Lebanon.”

He said none of the money would go to Hizbollah and said the pledges showed that the Lebanese people are not alone.

Lebanese officials say the top priority is building 10,000 prefabricated homes for the one million people displaced by the Israel-Hizbollah conflict.

Stockholm hosts a smaller gathering on Friday to discuss humanitarian needs in the Palestinian territories.
