A monument has been unveiled to those who died two years ago trying to rescue the hostages caught up in the Beslan massacre. Emotions have been running high in the small town in North Ossetia where three days of ceremonies have begun to commemorate the attack which left more than 330 people dead, many of them children.

As the day began, hundreds of families filed passed Beslan’s ruined school, laying tributes and remembering. Pro-Chechen militants took more than 1,000 children and adults hostage. The three day stand-off between them and the security forces ended in a bloodbath.
