They had been preparing to join ground operations in southern Lebanon. But Hizbollah’s single deadliest rocket strike yet ensured that a dozen Israeli army reservists would never make it across the border. The twelve died after ignoring warnings of incoming missile fire, according to witnesses. Reports say the troops were lying on mattresses and resting at the entrance to a cemetery when they met their deaths.

The attack in the Israeli village of Kfar Giladi, which left many others wounded, demonstrates just how far Israel still has to go in its war on Hizbollah. But there was one significant boost for the Israeli military. It announced it had captured one of the Hizbollah fighters who took part in the original ambush that sparked the conflict on July 12 – in which two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped. Little has been heard about them since. In the days and weeks that followed their abduction, Hizbollah has killed 58 Israeli soldiers and 36 civilians.
