Arab foreign ministers are holding an emergency meeting in Beirut to press for a ceasefire between Israel and Hizbollah. It is the second time the group has met. They last called for a halt in hostilities three days after the conflict began. Lebanon is waiting to see whether its concerns will be taken into account in a draft UN Security Council resolution designed to end the fighting. After hosting Syria’s Foreign Minister, the Lebanese government submitted proposed amendments to the existing text. It wants it to include a call for a quick withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanese soil in addition to “a full cessation of hostilities”. Opposition from Beirut caused the United States and France to delay today’s vote until Thursday. Diplomats from the council’s five permanent members are meeting later and a revised text may be presented.
