UN fails to agree on text condemning Israeli attack

The United Nations Security Council has failed to agree on a statement condemning an Israeli air strike that killed four unarmed UN observers. It comes after Washington blocked language that appeared critical of Israel. The UN says it asked Israel a dozen times to stop bombing near the post in the hours before the deadly air attack.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said:
“That shelling of the UN position, which is long established and clearly marked, started early in the morning and went on till after 7pm when we lost contact.
“And our general and troops and people on the ground were in touch with the Israeli army, warning them: please be careful, we have positions here, don’t harm our people.
“And many calls went out until this happened.”
Annan initially referred to the strike as an “apparently deliberate” targeting – something firmly rejected by Israel.
