Andres Lopez Obrador, the leftist leader who lost Mexico’s presidential election earlier this month, has vowed to start civil resistance to force a recount. Two hundred thousand of his supporters demonstrated in Mexico City on Sunday. The size of the protest gave him a lift in his attempt to persuade an election court to declare him the winner.

Despite Lopez Obrador’s ability to put supporters on the streets, an opinion poll in a Mexican paper shows 60 percent of Mexicans do not want a vote by vote recount which is what he is demanding. He told his supporters that fraud would be revealed. “I have the absolute certainty that if there is a vote by vote recount, it will be shown that we clearly and legally won,” he said. Official results show that Lopez Obrador lost by just 0.58 per cent of the vote to conservative ruling party candidate Felipe Calderon.
A recount of tally sheets has already confirmed Calderon as the winner.
